Lifting the Veil to Freedom
“But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
2 Corinthians 3:16-18 ESV
Most of what chapter 3 of 2nd Corinthians is talking about is the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant. The covenants that God made to Israel through Moses, and the covenant that God made through his Son Jesus.
There seems to be a theme in the Old Testament of the heavy yoke / burden the laws placed on the people. Through series of sacrifices made by the priests on your behalf you could be attoned for a time.
What Paul is speaking to is the truth found in the blood of Jesus. That his sacrifice attones once and for all for our sins, and that we are free from the law. Freedom comes at the cost of believing in and devoting your life to Jesus, and the ministry of spreading the good news.
I can attest that devotion to Christ does bring freedom. There are many things that we are yoked to. That weigh us down. Through the power of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, those chains can be broken because Jesus promises to take them from us.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.””
Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
