“‘But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,’ she said, ‘and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?’” John 4:11 NLT
Devotional title - Our misgivings about Jesus. The verse comes from the story where Jesus asks the Samaritan woman for a drink of water from the well. She was caught off guard because Jews did not associate with Samaritans. In verse 10 Jesus says “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
Another title would be - Our misgivings of Jesus and rationalization of our circumstance
Here are some great quotes. Some inner monologue Christians have:
“We think His ideals are lofty and impress us, but we believe He is not in touch with reality - that what He says cannot actually be done.”
“While we talk of our dealings with Him, others ask us, ‘Where are you going to get enough money to live? How will you live and who will take care of you?’ Or our misgivings begin within ourselves when we tell Jesus that our circumstances are just a little too difficult for Him. We say, ‘It’s easy to say, “trust in the Lord,” but a person has to live; and besides, Jesus has nothing with which to draw water - no means to be able to give us these things.’”
Chambers goes in to discuss the trap of thinking you have no misgivings about Jesus, only misgivings about your self. He discussed how pride does get in the way because we don’t want to admit that Jesus can accomplish something that we cannot.
“My misgivings arise from the fact that I search within to find how He will do what He says. My doubts spring from the depths from my own inferiority. If I detect these misgivings in myself, I should bring them into the light and confess them openly - ‘Lord, I have had misgivings about You. I have not believed in Your abilities, but only my own. And I have not believed in Your almighty power apart from my finite understanding of it.”
We pay Him lip service. We go through the motions of church or even a Bible study. Do you really believe who He says He is, or is He just a totem or a shrine you occasionally visit or call out to in despair? Are we scared of going “all-in” because of how that could effect our current situation? “All-in” could mean taking a little more time for God and service each day. The kind of service that seems unimportant to humans. Like washing someone feet. What could the equivalent of that look like in your life?
He is the Way. Truth. Life. The Gate. Living Water. The Word. He is my friend, and I want to treat Him better than I have been.
